The Royal Automobile Club is one of the London’s most renowned and prestigious clubs. Dating back to 1911 the building is Grade II* listed for its architectural quality and interior grandeur.

With an ambition to open up its membership to a wider audience, the RAC wanted to improve its services and facilities with a restoration programme for the Turkish Baths and Pool Hall, new sports facilities, an art gallery and new back of house accommodation.

Working within the tight constraints of its built footprint, Mackenzie Wheeler implemented a phased programme of refurbishment. A high level of stakeholder consultation was key to ensuring that this much-loved institution moved with the times whilst retaining its essential cultural character. A carefully phased programme meant that the RAC was able to stay open to its members throughout the refurbishment.
