Hall and Woodhouse Wichelstowe Mackenzie Wheeler Pub Architects Canal Pub Zinc Roof
27/11/2018 Hall and Woodhouse Wichelstowe complete!

Continuing our longstanding involvement in the expanding Hall & Woodhouse public house portfolio, MW are proud to announce completion of the main construction phase of H&W Wichelstowe. Due to open in February 2019, H&W will be a flagship venue for Hall & Woodhouse Ltd occupying a prominent canal-side site in Wichelstowe town centre, a new town under development to the south of Swindon.

The pub will be an important asset for the emerging community, and in its design we’ve drawn on research coming out of our ‘What is a nice old pub…….if it must be new?’ project. H&W Wichelstowe represents Phase I of a two stage project, with projected Phase II involving the construction of a 24 key hotel.

Mackenzie Wheeler Architects - Grand Hotel York - Hotel Extension - Oriel Window - Structural Glass
03/01/2018 Grand Hotel York Extension Nearing Completion!

The final phase of the Grand Hotel York extension is underway. The building is gradually revealing itself, having been hidden behind a screen of scaffolding for over 2 years. The 1st glimpses of the extension are very encouraging, with a long awaited view of the Oriel window at the junction of Rougier St and Tanner Row.

The window is formed from two 6 metre lengths of structural glass and supported by steel trimmers which in turn support the corner of the original ribbed concrete floors. The street level scaffold will be removed in due course which will reveal a pedestrian route through the corner of the building which will help to enliven what was once a nondecript street corner. More updates on the way!

Under new ownership of the Splendid Hotel Group, Mackenzie Wheeler were appointed to design a proposal to provide an extra 100 guest rooms to the Grand Hotel through the incorporation of a dated 1970s office block known locally as Roman House. The above photos are a before and after shot of the Roman House extension from Rougier St showing modifications to the windows, extended brickwork at 3rd floor and the new rooftop addition at 4th floor.

Scaffolding is now being removed section by section to reveal various interesting modifications to the building, including a new feature oriel window at the corner of Tanner Row and Rougier St.

We will keep you updated with further developments!

Mackenzie Wheeler have sponsered Sancho, our resident South African to undertake an epic road rally through Africa!

The Put Foot Rally is an incredible road trip adventure run for charity where people from all over the world come together to explore and experience the very best of Africa. The route sees crews in a wide variety of whacky vehicles, make their way through South Africa, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique, meeting up at checkpoints along the way. Primarily the rally is run for charity, The Put Foot Foundation, which has two goals; the first to provide young children in Africa with their first ever pair of school shoes and the second to contribute to the conservation of endangered animals, namely Rhino, Elephant, Lion, and Leopard. http://www.putfootrally.com/the-charity

Bon Voyage Sancho and please take note of what the website says: *Doors are required... we don’t want you eaten by a lion!

30/05/2017 The Pavilion at the Grand Hotel York opening in June!

Mackenzie Wheeler are delighted to announce the completion of the Pavilion bar and restaurant in York, a brand-new dining facility for The Grand, York's only 5-star hotel. The practice was originally involved with the 2010 conversion of the existing hotel from what was the Grade II* listed Great North Eastern Railway Headquarters. The Pavilion is the 1st part of a phased redevelopment which also involves the addition of 100 guest rooms within an adjacent 1960’s office block.

The practice has navigated challenging planning and conservation negotiations as well as the detailed design and construction phases and are very excited at this important milestone. We wish the hotel every success with this latest venture and look forward to the completion of the new hotel wing towards the latter part of the year.

02/05/2017 The White Hart Somerton wins Gold in the Bristol, Bath and Somerset tourism Awards 2016 / 17

Dating from the 16th Century, The White Hart is a Grade II listed building in the small town of Somerton, Somerset. The pub was acquired by the Draco Pub Company in 2012 and Mackenzie Wheeler were appointed to carry out a full planning and listed building application to sensitively refurbish and upgrade the existing pub. Unused storage areas at ground and first floors were integrated into the design to increase the trading and customer areas at ground floor and to increase the number of guest rooms at first floor from 5 to 8.

The pub and guest rooms gain excellent reviews from a broad range of independent travel websites which pay tribute to the unique and cozy atmosphere created through careful space planning and clever use of traditional materials within a uniquely historical context.

We are delighted to see the pub going from strength to strength and wish them all the best in the 2017 / 18 awards!
